Old|New School -- CD or Digital Download?

One of the things that I have found most interesting since recently releasing my record is people's preferences about wanting a physical CD versus a digital download.

Most people will say "young people today don't care about CDs - they just want the music, and digital delivery appeals to their desire for immediate gratification." I am guessing though that this isn't totally true.

I would love to have your thoughts, as comments to this blog post.

Tell me:
  • Do you prefer a CD or Digital download, and why?
  • What is your feeling on buying as opposed to... "finding" music you want to listen to?
  • How would you rate your comfort level (1-10) in buying something online, and why?

I think this is a really interesting conversation. I've already purchased the digital download, so clearly I'm comfortable with it, but I'm also really excited to buy the physical CD.

I think my desire for a physical version is related to how connected I feel with the artist. For some music, a digital download is enough, but if I feel a real connection with an artist's music, I want to have something I can hold in my hands.

In this case, besides feeling that connection and loving the music, I also love the artwork and want a physical copy for that reason too. I can't wait to get it!

I also have the digital downloads. But want the hard copy as well - because I love your music so much!

While I agree the digital dwlds were an instant gratification (and still enjoyyyying them), the physical CD would be my back-up copy just. in. case. Plus I would love for you to sign my hard copy one day, hopefully soon =)

I agree with the previous posters - I want to purchase both! If I was to only buy one, it would be the physical cd because then I don't have to put it on a CD to use in my car. And I'd like Benjamin to travel with me everywhere!

I also think the physical CD allows me to share Benjamin with friends a little easier - I've been known to lend CDs to friends for a week to get them interested... or to use at work. CDs are always a good go to.

I have always preferred a physical CD for numerous reasons.

1. Hard drives fail, back-up hard drives fail (a pain in which I know youve felt jamin).

2. Much care and love goes into creating some album artwork. Yes smart artists provide the artwork along with digital downloads, but looking at a PDF of a painting is not the same as seeing/holding it. Texture.

3. Quality.

I 'find' (a.k.a steal, test-drive) music all the time. If it's good and I end up keeping it, I usually go out and buy the disc. On occasion I'll like it enough to keep it, but if I was presented with the choice to buy it or delete it, I'd delete it. Those artists aren't losing out on my financial support.

I am more comfortable buying things online then offline. I hate people.

I haven't bought a digital version of a CD yet and I'm not planning to in the near future, to be honest. Of course it would make life for me easier, because most of the music I like to listen to is not available in regular record stores over here. But you just can't compare the feeling of holding the CD you really desired in your hands, not just being able to feel it but smell it and capture it with all your senses. It's like a book. You can't compare reading a book printed on paper to a digital version. It's just not the same, just not right, somehow. Or having a look at a picture printed or digital...
Coming back to the CD, of course the music ends up on my MP3-Player, so that I can take the music everywhere with me, but it's still good to know that the original is at home safe and sound and that I can always come back to it... I like touching things and let my thoughts travel.

So I'm definitely Old School, I guess.

I prefer the CD.
I guess it´s much easier just to add the music to your ipod, grab it and get out of your house, since everyone lives in a rush in these days.
But i really prefer the cd. Finding music online is a thing i always do since in my country i can´t find all of the music i want, when the album 9 by Damien Rice got out it took a year to reach Colombia...i got it a month after it was released because a girl from the igloo sent it for me.

I think there´s nothing to have the real thing in your hands, read the lyrics and have all the album collection from your favorite artist.
On saturday i went to a gig of a local rock band, they were amazing! and since i know the singer since i was in highschool he gave me the CD as a gift and signed it for me, which is awesome as well.
So i guess i am a bit old school in this aspect.

I bought the physical CD, I didn't consider getting the digital download for a second. I only download music:
a. If I can't find the CD or it's way too expensive or an import, or if I know I like one song and I will hate the rest. But I use Amazon only, I don't want iTunes molesting my music.
b. Illegally. Yes, illegally. If I like the album, I'll buy it. If I don't, I won't. But I've found that this is a great way to discover new music.

It's also a generational thing. I think younger people are most likely to use iTunes or the likes. But I'm in my late 20s and I don't understand why anyone would prefer to download music if for a few more dollars they could get a nice cd with nice artwork and pictures and even a dedication! ;)

PS. Great album BTW! I'm listening to it right now for the 2nd time.
